Themes used in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet Essays -- Literary Anal
The theme of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is entertainment. This is proven thought the play through use of comedy, drama, romance, and conflict. This style brought people of all ages, mindsets, and social classes to see the play since it used the mixture instead of just a single genre of entertainment. The result was Romeo and Juliet being very entertaining, profitable, and generally succeeding in its purpose. The use of comedy was usually through sexual puns and double entendre like ââ¬Å" ââ¬â¢Tis true, and therefore women, being the weaker vessels, are ever thrust to the wall. Therefore I will push Montagueââ¬â¢s men from the wall and thrust his maids to the wallâ⬠(1.1.15-18) and ââ¬Å"My naked weapon is out. Quarrel, I will back thee.â⬠(1.1.33-34).These sexual puns almost always solved the problems with traditional comedy not being funny to all social classes nor mindsets. The other type of comedy in the play was more traditional like the panicked start of the fight at the beginning ââ¬Å"Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? I do bite my thumb sir. Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? [Aside to Gregory] Is the law of our side if I say ââ¬Å"Ayâ⬠? [Aside to Sampson] no. No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb sir.â⬠(1.1.44-52). This comedy also broke the wall between the social classes and mindsets since scenes like this were funny to almost everyone. Both types of comedy usually were funny to almost everyone since they did not depend on certain situations which only a select few would usually experience. Thus this made the play even better at its purpose of entertainment. The use of drama throughout the play is most prevalent in the last few acts but is also shown thought the rest of the play. When Romeo is... ... Montagues and Capulets. For example the first combat is caused by that hatred alone "My naked weapon is out. Quarrel, I will back thee. How? Turn thy back and run? Fear me not. No, marry. I fear thee! Let us take the law of our sides; let them begin. I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list. Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them, which is disgrace to them if they bear it." (1.1.33-43). The actual combat was presented quickly after this in this fashion "Draw if you be men. - Gregory, remember thy washing blow. They fight. Part fools! [Drawing his sword.] Put up your swords. You know not what you do."(1.1.63-65). These elements were all combined in Romeo and Juliet and put to use to make an interesting plot for the purpose of entertainment. This was a sucess as shown by how long this has been an interesting play to watch and listen to.

Freshman
This can cause stress and anxiety for some people. Stress often leads to eating more and eating foods that are not as healthy. Also, if students have a hard time adjusting to college life, they may find themselves being unhappy, which could lead to drinking more and eventually gaining weight. Sometimes adjusting is extremely sad and upsetting for college freshman, which often leads to emotional eating. Exercise habits can become worse In college because students are busy and do not always have the time to worry about staying in shape. They can find themselves at class all day, studying all night, and having time to eat, but not workout. Much fewer people are student athletes in college than in high school. In high school, the teams are easier to make because it is much less competitive and more about having fun. In college, sports are intense and only a small amount of people participate in them. Therefore, these high school athletes are not getting as much exercise In college because most of them are not participating In a sport anymore, which can result In weight gain.Another cause for the freshman fifteen is the food being available at all times. College students do not have a specific time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The dining halls are open and filled with food all day. Some students cannot handle this and end up eating much more than they should, just because it is there and it is available to them, which they are not used to. Although there are people who will still eat healthy and restrain from overeating, several people do not have that will power and will eat every time they pass by a addling hall. The causes of gaining the Irishman fifteen are common at all colleges and universities, and students need to start eating healthier, working out more, and being conscious of their health. It is clear that the freshman fifteen is a real thing. The problems that cause this weight gain can happen at any school and that is why it is so common. Although not everyone who puts on weight in college puts on exactly fifteen pounds, it is still concerning. College students, of all people, should try to stay healthy. They are developing bad habits that could last for the rest of their lives.

Disadvantages of video games Essay
Video games have been available to consumers for the last 30 years. They are a unique form of entertainment, because they encourage players to become a part of the gameââ¬â¢s script. Todayââ¬â¢s sophisticated video games require players to pay constant attention to the game, rather than passively watching a movie. This has both positive and negative impacts on players. Several studies have been published that explore these impacts on todayââ¬â¢s children. Sections: What impact does playing video games have on children or adolescents? Tips on managing your childââ¬â¢s media consumption. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) References What impact does playing video games have on children or adolescents? The most widely used ââ¬Å"positiveâ⬠impact video games are said to have on children is that they may improve a playerââ¬â¢s manual dexterity and computer literacy. Ever-improving technology also provides players with better graphics that give a more ââ¬Å"realisticâ⬠virtual playing experience. This quality makes the video game industry a powerful force in many adolescent lives. However, numerous studies show that video games, especially ones with violent content, make teens more aggressive. Part of the increase in aggressive behavior is linked to the amount of time children are allowed to play video games. In one study by Walsh (2000), a majority of teens admitted that their parents do not impose a time limit on the number of hours they are allowed to play video games. The study also showed that most parents are unaware of the content or the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating (see below) of the video games their children play. In another study conducted by Gentile, Lynch, Linder & Walsh (2004, p.6) ââ¬Å"adolescent girls played video games for an average of 5 hours a week, whereas boys averaged 13 hours a weekâ⬠. The authors also stated that teens who play violent video games for extended periods of time: Tend to be more aggressive Are more prone to confrontation with their teachers May engage in fights with their peers See a decline in school achievements. (Gentile et al, 2004). The interactive quality of video games differs from passively viewing television or movies because it allows players to become active participants in the gameââ¬â¢s script. Players benefit from engaging in acts of violence and are then able to move to the gameââ¬â¢s next level. Gentile & Anderson (2003) state that playing video games may increase aggressive behavior because violent acts are continually repeated throughout the video game. This method of repetition has long been considered an effective teaching method in reinforcing learning patterns. Video games also encourage players to identify with and role play their favorite characters. This is referred to as a ââ¬Å"first-personâ⬠video game (Anderson & Dill, 2000, p. 788) because players are able to make decisions affecting the actions of the character they are imitating. After a limited amount of time playing a violent video game, a player can ââ¬Å"automatically prime aggressive thoughtsâ⬠(Bushman & Anderson, 2002, p. 1680). The researchers concluded that players who had prior experience playing violent video games responded with an increased level of aggression when they encountered confrontation (Bushman & Anderson, 2002). In a Joint Statement (2000) before the Congressional Public Health Summit, a number of American medical associations ââ¬â the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry ââ¬â caution parents about violence in the media and its negative effect on children. Their report states that exposure to violent media can elevate aggressive feelings and thoughts, especially in children. These effects on aggressive behavior can be long-term. Although fewer studies have been conducted on interactive video games, evidence suggests that playing violent video games may have a more dramatic influence on the behavior of children and adolescents (Joint Statement, 2000). Back to top Tips on managing your childââ¬â¢s media consumption Because of the popularity of video games, completely eliminating them from your childââ¬â¢s life might be difficult. But you can decrease the negative impact that they have on your child. Here are a few tips: Know the rating of the video games your child plays (see below). Do not install video game equipment in your childââ¬â¢s bedroom. Set limits on how often and how long your child is allowed to play video games. Monitor all of your childââ¬â¢s media consumption ââ¬â video games, television, movies and Internet. Supervise your childââ¬â¢s Internet use ââ¬â there are now many ââ¬Å"video gamesâ⬠available for playing online. Take the time to discuss with your children the games they are playing or other media they are watching. Ask your children how they feel about what they observe in these video games, television programs or movies. This is an opportunity to share your feelings and grow closer with your child. Share with other parents information about certain games or ideas for helping each other in parenting. Back to top The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) The ESRB is a self-regulatory body established in 1994 by the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA). The major video game manufacturers created this board after concerned groups applied pressure over the content of video games. Similar to the movie industryââ¬â¢s rating system, all major game companies now submit their new products for rating to specially trained raters at the ESRB. The ESRB rates over 1,000 games per year. The ESRB looks at a number of factors when rating games. In particular, it considers the amount of violence, sex, controversial language and substance abuse found in a game. Based on its developed guidelines, the ESRB then gives an age recommendation and content descriptor to each game submitted. The following are the rating symbols currently in use, according to the ESRB Web site. Early Childhood (EC): Content should be suitable for children 3 years and older and contain no objectionable material. Everyone (E): Content suitable for persons ages 6 and older. The game may contain minimal violence and some ââ¬Å"comic mischief. â⬠Teen (T): Content suitable for persons ages 13 and older. Content is more violent than (E) rating and contains mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes. Mature (M): Content suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Content definitely has more mature sexual themes, intense violence and stronger language. Adults Only (AO): Content suitable only for adults and may contain graphic sex and/or violence. Adult Only products are not intended for persons under the age of 18. Rating Pending (RP): Game has been submitted to the ESRB and is awaiting a final rating. The ESRB Web site has more details about this rating system, as well as the ââ¬Å"content descriptorsâ⬠that are used in conjunction with the ratings on game packaging. The site is also useful for parents who want to search for the rating of a particular game. Back to top References Bushman, B. & Anderson, C. (2002). A Beautiful Mind Essays - Princeton University, A Beautiful Mind
A BEAUTIFUL MIND This is a true story about a man by the name of John Nash Jr. who was discovered to have paranoid schizophrenia in his adult life. The story starts with Nash as a student at Princeton University. In a scene where John arrives at Princeton to commence his studies, one of the patterns through his point-of-view shot was when John connects his vision of effulgent lemons, a punch bow, and the pattern of a fellow student?s tie. In this sequence and others in the film, John uses flashes of light in his pov shots to point out his recognition of significant patterns in the world around him, such as the magazines and newspapers lighting p when he thinks he has discovered a code. In another scene, John visits a top-secret regime center to decipher a code captured from the Soviets. In 1947, John attends Princeton University; his goal at this time is to come up with a great original mathematical theory. In 1953 his goal, he thinks is to help the Amalgamated states find a bomb, supposedly being bult by the Soviet Almagamation. He also ends up getting married in this year as well. John is working at M.I.T. and this is when his schizophrenia is full blown. He thinks he is a spy working for the department of Defense. His goal is to decipher, how to deal with his schizophrenia. He culminates up back at Princeton and convinces his old friend, Martin Henson to give him a job. His goal at this time is to get out in the real world and later on to be a teacher/Professor. He culminates up winning the Nobel Prize for his game theory. John defiantly has lots of obstacles and problems to confront. His first was when he was asked to play that board game with a schoolmate, Martin Henson. I feel he was asked by Martin to prove to the other men that John wasn?t as smart as he made out to be, plus to get back at John because, when he first met Martin he fulminated him. He then endeavored to fit in with some friends by peregrinating to the bars with them. John had to come up with a theory quickly or risk not being appointed a position with an important company. He finally does, and then acceded to work with the Department of Defense as a spy. It was very hard on him to endeavor to keep this regime information a secret from his coworkers and his girlfriend/wife, Alicia. Because of her insistence he goes back to the University and meets his old friend Martin and asks him for a job, so that he can, not only get back in the public, but to commence dealing with his illness. He has an abundance of drawbacks during this time, b ecause he still visually perceives his imaginary people, but perseveres and ends up being able to ignore these people and acquire a teaching job. In 1994, he is told that he is up for the Noble Prize and he meets one of the men from the Noble Prize review board. This man verbally expresses he has come to interview him. While john Nash and the interviewer are chatting, one of the professors come up and lays a pen down in front of him. Soon all the professors in the room were putting pens on the table in front of him. Helinger told John when this transpires it signifies a professor knows he has earned the prestige of his colleagues, that he has been accepted. He does culminate up winning the Noble Prize; John just wanted to be recognized for something important dealing with mathematics and this does become a reality. When he first gets to Princeton, he is in his room by himself and he was looking out his window. He witnessed an abundance of schoolmates with groups of people. John was a loner and had verbally expressed he did not like people and they did not like him. He suddenly turns around and Charles is their claiming to be his roommate. It seems whenever he had too much going his friend Charles suddenly appears. It meant to me that he

Mao and Dynastic History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Mao and Dynastic History - Essay Example At an early age, Mao liked to read popular historical books concerning political turmoil and unconventional military heroes. He liked the artistic works of Kang Yuwei, a nationalist reformer in China, and admired the earlier political generations of Chinese history. Indeed, China's last dynasty started to succumb the moment Moa founded the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. Thirteen years later, the political party had a membership of more than eighty thousand individuals. Chiang Kai-shek, a commander of the Nationalist Army, ordered his army to pursue members of the Chinese Communist Party. Although faced with challenges and mistrust, Maoââ¬â¢s party formed an alliance with the Nationalists against the Japanese government during the Second World War. Later on, the Nationalists fled to Taiwan during a civil war that the communists won under Maoââ¬â¢s leadership. Surely, there exist considerable similarities between Maoââ¬â¢s rule and former emperors who ruled in China. For exa mple, Mao established policies that allowed its government to redistribute some lands to peasant farmers. Mao provided a gateway to democracy and realization of human rights by providing college students with the freedom to carry out counter-revolutionaries. Similarly, the former emperors such as Liu Bang established friendly policies that lowered taxation rates and provided people with more freedom. However, Mao had a different leadership model that set in a motion of ââ¬Å"Great Leap Forwardâ⬠that aimed at safeguarding the industrial, agricultural, and construction sectors.

California advocacy paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
California advocacy - Research Paper Example Legalizing marijuana would free up law-enforcement funds and manpower so they are free to tackle more urgent social issues such as gangs and violent criminals. There is precedent in other countries such as the Netherlands where, although not fully legal, use of marijuana is openly tolerated. It can be legally purchased and consumed in Amsterdam at specially licensed ââ¬Ëcoffee housesââ¬â¢ without undue risk to the general public. This fact proves that opponents claims of rampant anarchy should the drug be made legal are baseless. Available evidence in California and elsewhere proves that legalizing marijuana within the state would be beneficial to society, contribute to the welfare of the state and improve quality of life for many. A movement to make the drug legal was voted down last November in the form of Proposition 19 but was revived last month in the form of the Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform 2012. Proposition 19 "would have allowed adults to grow and possess mariju ana and authorized cities and counties to legalize and tax sales" (Hoeffel, 2011). Proposition 19 failed by a vote of 46-54 percent last November, but may win in 2012 with larger voter turn-out due to the Presidential election and with some adjustments to the bill. Because Cannabis Policy Reform is based on the same arguments brought forward in Proposition 19, it is appropriate to examine some of the issues that were addressed by Prop 19 in examining the topic. It is important to remember in this discussion that possession of marijuana in quantities of less than an ounce is merely a civil infraction within the state rather than a criminal misdemeanor as it is in many other states after the enactment of SB 1449, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in October of 2010. In addition, medical marijuana use and growers are also legal under state, but not federal law, following enactment of Proposition 215 in 1996 (Gieringer, 2011). This is because marijuana has proven more effective in re lieving numerous health issues than prescription drugs as is attested to by a cancer patient and former police commissioner. In addition to relieving his nausea, Jo Daly said he was ââ¬Å"able to drastically reduce my dependence on more powerful prescription drugs that I was prescribed for pain and nausea. With the help of medical marijuana, which I ingest only occasionally and in small amounts, I no longer need the Compazine, Lorazepam, Ativan and Halcion. No combination of these medications provided adequate relief. They also caused serious side effects that I never experienced with marijuanaâ⬠(1997). Proposition 19 was designed to extend the benefits of marijuana to the state and the average citizen without the need to go through the farce of obtaining a medical prescription. The provisions given under Proposition 19 would have changed things very little from where they already are today on an individual level but could have given the state numerous benefits. Individuals o ver the age of 21 would be allowed to possess and consume the drug in quantities of less than one ounce at a time in non-public places and could grow marijuana plants in a private residence with at least 25 square feet of personal space (Legislative Analyst's Office, 2009). The only difference here would be that those growing and using the drug already wouldn't need to fear being caught and

Contemporary Developments in Business and Management Essay - 6
Contemporary Developments in Business and Management - Essay Example So, in 2005, it actualized that plan by adopting the Diversity Program. This program apart from improving Nikeââ¬â¢s ethical image, also positively impacted the business environment of Nike both in its external as well as in its internal environment, opening up a surge of opportunities and at the same time it also giving rise to challenges in certain aspects. So, this paper will analyze Nikeââ¬â¢s internal as well as external business environment, focusing on how the current political and economic factors are influencing its decision making particularly regarding its Diversity program, ending with the recommendations on how to further optimize its functioning Nike Corporation is the worldââ¬â¢s leading supplier and or manufacturer of sports equipments, athletic shoes and apparels. It was formed in 1964, and by 1980, it already had more than 50% market share in the United States. Nike has over five hundred factory or office locations in around 45 countries all over the world. Nikeââ¬â¢s operations in UK are extensive with stores at many prominent places and manufacturing process is also going on. With such extensive locations, Nike, an American corporation has a sizeable percentage of employees from diverse groups. So, Nike is a very diverse company and focuses a great deal on improving diversity throughout the organisation. ââ¬Å"This company operates on six continents, and employs around 23,000 people. Their suppliers, shippers, retailers and service providers employ close to 1 million people. The diversity inherent in such size is helping Nike evolve its role as a global company.â⬠(Clarke et. al, 2005). But, as part of a p ositive image building exercise, Nike under the leadership of Phil Knight planned to increase that percentage to recognizable and optimum levels. So, in 2005, it actualized that plan by adopting the Diversity Program in its recruitment process. Phil
